Jose M. Goikolea works as a psychiatrist at the Bipolar Disorders Program at the Hospital Clínic, at Barcelona, since 2002.

He has combined clinical care of bipolar patients with the intensive research activity of his group. He has taken part in a good number of clinical and neurocognition studies, as well as in treatment trials , including psychological (patient and family psychoeducation) and pharma-chological, especially with atypical antipsychotics and novel antiepi-leptic drugs.

He has coauthored more than 30 articles and several book chapters. His current research is focused on the role of maintenance ECT in bipolar disorder and in neurobiological disturbances in first-episode mania.

In 2005 he achieved the Young Minds Award from the American Psychiatric Association.
